How to Grow Memories That Last Forever

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

If you are a sensory person like me, I would assume that you love gardening like me.

Growing up in the Midwest the summer time was always a time full of good memories, like playing in the rows and rows of tomato’s, my dad would plant. Exploring the forest next to my home, helping pick beans as my entire family would come over, and can them late into the night. I definitely will not forget how big the peonies grew in our garden, and the many snapdragons my grandmother had lining her walkway leading to her door. These memories have permanently shaped who I am as a person. When I was a kid I learned to appreciate at an early age without any technology, that laying on the grass and staring at the sky was super cool. Bending down not to far to smell the beautiful aroma of the peonies and snapdragons and remembering how wonderful they smelled. Spending all day in a back yard, with a big vegetable garden, at night catching lighting bugs and bringing them in my room to watch them glow.

How do these memories, translate to my life now, as a grown man, with two beautiful daughters, and a lovely wife and dog, living in Northern California. Well I don’t have that big yard anymore, but a small home and garden. What I crave in my life and the things I want my girls to experience are those sensory moments I had as a kid. When I smell a peony now it takes me to my backyard as a kid. When I smell a snapdragon, I am instantly transported to my grandmothers house. I want that experience to happen everyday in my little garden. When I look out my windows, I want to see something beautiful I want a sensory experience everywhere I turn. So yes guys, if you are like me, plant those snapdragons and peonies, plant that vegetable garden you always wanted and can those beans. Continue to use every opportunity to create a sensory experience. In our family garden, my daughters can pick strawberries and blueberries. Grace, my youngest, loves to pick her mom of bouquet of flowers from time to time. My oldest daughter Audrey enjoys munching on parsley, and my wife loves all the herbs. Me, if you are like me, will always have something around you that smells wonderful, that is beautiful, and tastes really good.

And if you are like me, you are happy to know, that these sensory experiences one day will be memories and hopefully if I hope enough, that the love I have for gardening will be carried on in my children’s lives.
